800-kilovolt ultra-high voltage power line from Shaanxi to Hubei

An ultra-high voltage power line on Friday started to transmit direct current electricity from an energy base in northern Shaanxi to central China’s Hubei Province. The 800-kilovolt ultra-high voltage power lines starts from Yulin, a city of Shaanxi Province, and stretches 1,127 kilometers to Wuhan, capital of Hubei, passing provinces of Shanxi and Henan route. Its transmission capacity can reach eight million kilowatts. “The northern part of Shaanxi is rich in primary energy reserve such as crude, gas, coal, and salt. It is also a rich area of new energy such as wind power and photovoltaic resource. At present, the installed capacity of new energy in Shaanxi has exceeded 20 million kilowatts, and this project can unremittingly transmit the clean energy from the northern and western parts of Shaanxi to Hubei and other parts in central China,” said Zhao Yingbo, deputy director of State Grid Shaanxi Electric Power Company. The power line, connecting the northwest and central China, will play complementary role in resource allocation in a large scale, improve cross-province power distribution capacity, and meet the growing demand for electricity in central China. “Upon completion, the power line can transmit 40 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to Hubei every year, which accounts for about 70 percent of Wuhan’s annual electricity consumption. It will ensure the smooth operation of Hubei’s power grid and more stable and reliable power supply,” said Peng Ying, deputy director of State Grid Hubei Ultra-high Voltage Power Line Office. To construct the ultra-high voltage power line, a new generation of ultra-high voltage power transmission technology have been applied for the first time, and domestically-developed equipments have also been widely applied. The power line also made a breakthrough on the 467-kilometers electricity transmission route without repeaters. So far, the State Grid has 14 ultra-high voltage power lines transmitting alternating current electricity and 13 ultra-high voltage power lines transmitting direct current. The power line under operation and construction measures 45,000 kilometers, generating over 480 million kilowatt of power and transmitting more than two trillion kilowatt of electricity.
