High-speed train derailment in Guizhou
The driver of a high-speed train in southern China was killed and eight people were injured when two cars derailed early Saturday after hitting a mudslide, state broadcaster CCTV reported. The accident occurred midmorning as the train was entering a tunnel in the inland southern province of Guizhou.

China sends five satellites into orbit by sea launch
China successfully sent five satellites into space from the East China Sea on April 30. The five satellites, including the Jilin-1 Gaofen 03D, were launched by a Long March-11 carrier rocket at 11:30 Beijing Time and have entered the planned orbit. The newly-launched satellites will provide commercial remote sensing data services for sectors including land resource survey, urban planning and disaster monitoring. This mission is China’s third sea-based launch mission, which further expanded the maneuvering range of maritime launch and accumulated technological expertise for future long-distance sea-based launch missions. The mission’s success will lay cornerstones for normalized and high-frequency launches at sea in the future.
China national botanical garden unveiled in Beijing
China unveiled its National Botanical Garden in Beijing on Monday as part of the country’s plan to preserve biodiversity. With a total planned area of nearly 600 hectares, the garden boasts more than 30,000 species of plants, accounting for 10 percent of the world’s total.
